READ! Basque Country

“For every person who loves Spain, there are a dozen who prefer books about her.” – Ernest Hemingway

The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway – Classic “Lost Generation” novel set in Paris, Pamplona, Bayonne and San Sebastian.

April in Spain, by John Banville – This installment of the Quirk mystery series from one of Ireland’s most celebrating authors is set on the idyllic coast of San Sebastian.

The Art Restorer, by Julián Sánchez – Ok you should maybe read The Antiquarian first, a thriller woven through the world of Barcelona antiques. But then definitely follow it up with this fun page turner set in San Sebastian.

Origin, by Dan Brown – Book five of the Robert Langdon series (The DaVinci Code) opens with an opulent event at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The fun continues across Spain and ultimately ends up in Barcelona. What’s not to love?

Guernica,  by Dave Boling – Historical fiction set before during and after the horrific bombing of the small Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation, by Mark Kurlansky – This one is on my bedside table but I love this author and it’s bound to be fascinating

Basque Country: A Culinary Journey Through a Food Lover’s Paradise – by Marti Buckley – Vivd stories and photographs of Basque customs with delicious recipes.

Pintxos: Small Plates in the Basque Tradition, by Gerald Hirigoyen  – California influenced versions of Spanish tapas and French Basque dishes from this acclaimed chef’s San Francisco restaurants Bocadillos and Piperade.

Biarritz Basque, by Frédéric Beigbeder – Another beautiful addition to the coffee table series from the publisher Assouline.

Basque Folklores: Timeless Collection of Stories from the Heart of the Basque Country, by A.S. Mapa  – Doesn’t this sound fun? I just ordered it…
